The project of classically trained artist Shara Nova, My Brightest Diamond ranges from moody indie rock, densely arranged chamber pop, and electro-tinged dance music united by the powerful emotions she expresses. Fusing elements of opera, cabaret, chamber music, and rock, the project began when the singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist was living in New York City and collaborating with the similarly boundary pushing Sufjan Stevens. Following well-received albums like 2006's Bring Me the Workhorse, Nova returned to her home state of Michigan and drew inspiration from her surroundings in Detroit for works like 2011's All Things Will Unwind, the experimental art-pop of 2014's This Is My Hand, and the danceable 2018 album A Million and One. After appearing in the Tony Award-winning Broadway musical adaptation of Stevens' Illinois, My Brightest Diamond returned with 2024's Fight the Real Terror, a galvanizing work inspired by Sinéad O'Connor.
