Early-’90s alt-rock supergroup Temple of the Dog featured members of Soundgarden and Pearl Jam and released one iconic album in tribute to their late friend, Andrew Wood of Mother Love Bone. ∙ Temple of the Dog was formed in 1990 by Soundgarden’s Chris Cornell, who invited his bandmate Matt Cameron and Pearl Jam’s Jeff Ament, Stone Gossard, and Mike McCready to record a tribute. ∙ During one of the group’s early practices, Eddie Vedder (who had just gotten the gig as Pearl Jam’s frontman) offered vocal help on the song “Hunger Strike” and was invited to join the band. ∙ The supergroup released their self-titled debut album in 1991, and it became a Platinum-selling, Top 10 hit in both the US and Canada. ∙ The Cornell-Vedder duet “Hunger Strike” and Andrew Wood tribute “Say Hello 2 Heaven” were back-to-back Top 5 hits on Billboard’s Mainstream Rock Tracks chart. ∙ In 1998, Kerrang! magazine included Temple of the Dog on their list of 100 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die. ∙ To celebrate the album’s 25th anniversary in 2016, the band reissued the LP—with bonus tracks and videos of early live performances—and played a handful of reunion shows.
