The Informers were one of many decent but not outstanding Philadelphia soul groups that managed to cut a single or two in the 1960s that would have fit right in production-wise with much of what was on soul radio, even if they didn't get much of any airplay. They were capable of both the standard slow Philly ballad soul and more Motown-flavored fast numbers, showing a strong Temptations influence on their second 45. The group's career was interrupted for a couple of years when two of the members were drafted in mid-1967. Upon re-forming when those two got out of the Army in 1969, they changed their name to the Fabulous Performers, after being informed that another group were calling themselves the Informers. Both sides of the two Informers singles on J-Rude were reissued on the compilation The Sounds of North Philly, along with both sides of an early unreleased acetate. That disc also includes eight released and unissued sides by the Fabulous Performers, as well as ten songs by an unrelated '60s Philadelphia soul group, the Royal Five. ~ Richie Unterberger
