Chi è The Roots
The Roots have crafted a unique brand of alternative hip-hop sustained by live instrumentation, billowing neo-soul, and free-form jazz. The group was founded in 1987 by drummer Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson and rapper Tariq “Black Thought” Trotter, classmates at Philadelphia’s High School for Creative & Performing Arts, who started out busking together on street corners around the University of Pennsylvania. Additional bandmates joined the fold, including keyboardist-turned-superproducer Scott Storch, bass player Leonard “Hub” Hubbard, and MC Malik B. In every iteration of the group, The Roots pride themselves on their unconventional approach to hip-hop. By fusing abstract poetry, experimental rhyme schemes, and stinging sociopolitical commentary, the band members ensured they would stand apart from others in the rap landscape. Illadelph Halflife, released in 1996, was fueled by songs like the provocative yet reflective “What They Do.” The collective’s breakthrough album, 1999’s Things Fall Apart, was led by the amorous single “You Got Me,” featuring fellow Philadelphia rapper Eve and left-of-center soul singer Erykah Badu.
