A free-spirited project from acid folk icon Peter Stampfel, Wildernauts is a trio with the former Holy Modal Rounder joined by Walker Shepard on banjo and Eli Smith on guitar. Specializing in traditional folk music (or new material that sounds like traditional folk music), the group clearly values playful spontaneity over precise instrumental and vocal technique. The three musicians had crossed paths on numerous occasions before they began working together, releasing their self-titled debut album in January 2024.
