Crystal Viper are 21st-century headbangers who channel the shadowy grandeur of early '80s metal. Their focal point is Marta Gabriel with her piercing, glass-shattering wail. “The Ghost Ship” anchors their third album, 2010's Legends, and showcases their ability to balance galloping fury with elaborate arrangements informed by horror soundtracks. On the claustrophobic “Witch's Mark”, they dispense with the ornate and unleash a raw attack with razor-sharp rhythms. In contrast, “Prophet of the End” is a ballad downright moving in its acoustically rendered evocation of the apocalypse.
