Playing drums since age nine, Melbourne singer/producer Georgia Flipo was all set for a career as a musician for hire. But right around when they came out as queer in 2021, they also realized they wanted to be front and center as a solo artist. “A lot of my songs were queer-based, but I didn’t want to share my story [before then],” Flipo told Amy Shark on Apple Music in 2024. “Once I was out and proud, then I felt comfortable to share my music.” Since then, G Flip has brought drum-kicked spontaneity to their confessional lyrics, anthemic thrust, and bold genre fluidity. Mental health is never far from the spotlight: 2019’s “Drink Too Much” details a damning pattern of anxious imbibing, while the 2022 ballad “Waste of Space” recounts Flipo learning to embrace their non-binary gender identity. G Flip’s biggest breakthrough came with 2023’s DRUMMER, which topped the Australian albums chart and saw a record-setting seven songs voted into triple j’s Hottest 100 poll in a single year—led by the breakup portrait “The Worst Person Alive.” Flipo continues to mine catharsis against a refreshing variety of stylistic backdrops, leaning hard into the doubled vocals and reverbed drums of ’80s rock on 2025’s “Disco Cowgirl” and “In Another Life.”
