Soul music in the '60s began as a regional phenomenon and went nationwide. Studios in Memphis, Muscle Shoals, Detroit, Chicago and other cities each recorded hit records with their own distinct style. Labels such as Stax, Atlantic and Motown ruled the charts with legendary singers Aretha Franklin, Otis Redding and Marvin Gaye, but also many lesser known artists who could give the hitmakers a run for their money.
