Formed by brooding singer/songwriter Mark Linkous in 1995, the music of indie rock collective Sparklehorse was hard to pin down from the very beginning. Blessed with a beautiful-but-melancholy croon and a deep experimental streak, Linkous filled his albums with both grandly cinematic tunes and offbeat lo-fi sketches, and his songs blurred the lines between gothic country, woozy dream-pop, fractured electronica, and fuzzed-out psychedelic rock. Though he tragically committed suicide in 2010, Linkous left behind some of indie's most haunting melodies and poignant lyrics.
