Initially named Skunk to reflect an overlapping passion for both ska and funk, Sydney ensemble Skunkhour dabbled in many other sweet spots over their decade-long career. That versatility was enhanced by the dual focal points of brothers Aya and Del Larkin, who covered singing and rapping, respectively. Del’s charismatic flow is a prominent feature of the band’s first two albums, while his reflective spoken-word delivery contrasts nicely with his brother’s soulful scenery-chewing on 1995’s “Up to Our Necks in It.” After Del exited in 1996, Skunkhour naturally became more melodic and streamlined: behold Aya’s confident falsetto gliding over the slippery funk-rock grooves of 1999’s “Home.”
