Buck Owens, with his twangy, electrified, rock-inspired honky tonk, was one of the leading figures of the Bakersfield Sound. The country movement emerged in the ‘60s and was named for Owens' California hometown. Before the decade was finished, the singer landed 15 consecutive number one hits on the country charts and even became a television star. From 1969 to 1986 Owens co-hosted Hee Haw, a country music and comedy variety show. While country heavyweights such as Gram Parsons and Dwight Yoakam have expressed their appreciation for Owens, the singer's influence isn't regulated only to one genre; Ringo Starr and Ray Charles have memorably covered him, and even blink-182 drummer Travis Barker was involved in a tribute.
