Soca Essentials
Playlist - 81 Songs
Dr. Jay de Soca Prince, the Canadian DJ, producer, and promoter, is also the host of his own soca radio show. So who better to take over our playlist of the best soca tracks, with an aim to “shine a light on songs that need to be on everyone’s radar while including the popular songs from years past as well.” In honor of this year’s Toronto Caribbean Carnival, this set will help you “get ready for the Parade of the Bands as well as big fetes like Soca or Die,” Dr. Jay tells Apple Music. “I love this music, and the world needs the positive energy that soca emits.” Read on for comments on a couple of his selections, and if you hear something you like, add it to your library. Voice, “Higher” “The lyrics resonate with me on a deep level. This is not a game for me. I love soca and have dedicated my life to this. I’ve been fortunate enough to travel the world playing this genre of music. So to see some online platforms simply exist just to tear down others within this space? Plus I love how Voice sampled the 2001 T&T Road March ‘Stranger’ after the chorus by the late and great Mighty Shadow.” Full Blown, “Good Spirits” “One of the big releases for Trinidad Carnival 2025 was the ‘Big Links Riddim.’ ‘The Greatest Bend Over’ by Yung Bredda was a smash hit and just got remixed with dancehall superstar Sean Paul. Both Machel Montano and Kes have big chunes on the riddim as well, but I chose to spotlight ‘Good Spirits’ because the two brothers in Full Blown (yes, actual blood brothers) wrote every song as well as produced the riddim. This song is what soca music is truly about at its core. We’re in a good good spirit and don’t have time to beef. Let all bad energy ride out!”
