“This track felt like the anthem to tie together all the themes this project addresses,” says Kayps of “BUNUBA BABY,” taken from his second album—of the same name. Pulling from his own experiences, and those of his family and country, the Walmatjarri and Bunuba artist’s record provides a sharp, focused, and unflinching account of many of the issues facing First Nations individuals and communities today. “The idea of having this one as the title track made sense because the lyrics felt like something us mob have been shouting from the mountains forever,” he says. “It wasn’t intended to be the case, but it felt like something that’s been playing on my mind since the start of the process.”
