Romantic bliss and fallout are both well documented in the self-reflective electropop of Sydney trio Glades. Working with multi-instrumentalist producers Cameron Robertson and Joseph Wenceslao, singer/guitarist Karina Wykes finds sustained source material in the turbulence of dating, applying dreamy melodies for added poignancy on tracks such as 2016’s “Drive” and 2017’s gold-certified breakthrough “Do Right.” While many Glades songs play like sleek 1980s synth-pop updated for the oversharing of the digital age, the band also embraces more modern touchstones. The 2020 single “Vertigo” sees Wykes move comfortably into singsong R&B territory, whereas 2023’s “Goodbyes” transposes confessional intimacy to a widescreen setting via a longing duet with LA duo FRENSHIP. Wykes has only grown more gracefully emotive as a singer, wringing renewed emotional depth out of the pulsing 2024 earworm “Alone” as she relates the oh-so-familiar pain of watching a former lover become a mere stranger.
