Catfish and the Bottlemen write intensely focused indie-rock songs with dark, introspective verses and happy choruses. Singer Van McCann lays out the grubby details of his personal life against some tightly dynamic musical interplay (“Soundcheck,” “7”) and then seeks redemption by whacking his guitar up and having a good cathartic yell. “Kathleen” is muscular and bruised ‘10s guitar pop, while “Twice” is a pounding musical shrug about life's stressful moments. The woozy “Cocoon” and “Homesick,” meanwhile, spiral giddily around a series of compelling melodic hooks.
