Ukrainian singer Jamala has been a tour de force on Kiev’s pop scene since 2011, thanks to her ability to marry jazz, indie, horn-fuelled soul and—occasionally—minimal electro with her astonishingly agile vocals. Her impressive debut album, 2012’s For Every Heart, features the warm-hearted “You're Made of Love” and the zany “Smile”. But her career-defining moment came when she won the 2016 Eurovision Song Contest with the duduk-laced “1944”, a song about Stalin’s deportation of the Crimean Tatars (one of whom was Jamala’s great grandmother) from Russia.
