Though he started his career rapping in English, Casablanca rapper Don Bigg changed to the local Arabic dialect of Darija to be understood by as many Moroccans as possible. This attitude went on to inform the rest of his work, which largely deals in issues concerning youth on the fringes of Moroccan society. Bigg also stands out in a vibrant North African rap scene with his eclectic—and masterful—style. Sometimes he plumps for staccato string accompaniment in a grand gesture; others he bounces on a pop beat, or adopts a tongue-in-cheek sing-song voice to show he’s not so self-important.
