Louis Philippson: Classical Music for Everyone

Louis Philippson’s greatest goal, he tells Apple Music Classical, is to create new ways for people to discover classical music—“it’s so much cooler than people might expect,” explains the pianist and composer. With its rich feast of legendary performers, game and film soundtracks, famous classical works (original and arranged), plus some of Philippson’s original compositions, “Classical Music for Everyone” is the ideal showcase for the genre’s massive variety and scope.
There are no fewer than 67 tracks here, spanning 300 years from the golden age of the Baroque up to the present day. There’s plenty of J.S. Bach, for instance, offered here in vibrant reimaginings by violinists Eldbjørg Hemsing and Niklas Liepe. And there’s Philippson’s own intimate arrangements of the “Prelude” from the German composer’s Cello Suite No. 1. “This is music that has echoed through the centuries without needing a single explanation—it simply asks you to listen,” says Philippson. “Its timeless beauty speaks directly to the soul.”
Philippson adds his imaginative touch to Beethoven, too. “Elise’s Dream is my way of stepping behind the curtains of Für Elise,” he says. “I’m trying to look at the piece from the perspective not of Beethoven but of Elise, whose existence cannot truly be pinpointed to a specific historical person.” Beethoven Virus, meanwhile, is Phillipson’s spectacular performance of a version of the “Pathétique” Sonata’s final movement originally composed by AI. “It garnered quite a lot of attention on social media for being ‘unplayable,’” says Philippson. “But together with the MDR Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Ben Palmer, I decided to show people that humans are—and always will be—capable of surpassing AI’s capabilities, especially when it comes to art.”
Alongside piano music by Schumann, Liszt, and Chopin, Philippson includes some of his own original compositions, including Paulette, his very first. “Composing was never something I specifically encountered during my studies,” he says. “Since in most classical fields, studying composition is something completely different from focusing on an instrument, I never felt the courage to actually try and listen to my intuition.” But Exposition, Philippson’s debut album, was the encouragement the young artist needed to develop his talents for original writing. “I decided to compose this piece,” he says, “whose melody originated from deep personal experiences, emotions, and intuition.”
