Ella Fitzgerald boasts one of the most extensive and inspired discographies of any vocalist in jazz, and it includes two enduring Christmas albums. The first is 1960’s big-band-driven collection of seasonal songs, Ella Wishes You A Swinging Christmas, which finds her putting a swaggering spin on ballads like “Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas” and “White Christmas” as well as more whimsical material (“Frosty The Snowman”). In 1967, Lady Ella returned with a compendium of traditional carols that beautifully highlight her mature vocal style, backed at turns by a chorus, chamber orchestrations, and a jazz combo.
