Mott the Hoople struggled through the late ‘60s and early ‘70s and were on the verge of splitting when fan David Bowie gave them his song “All the Young Dudes,” the huge hit that revitalized the band in 1972. Though Bob Dylan was one of frontman Ian Hunter's most audible influences, Mott took on some glam shadings in the mid-‘70s; they never lost their grounding in R&B, either. Hunter quit after 1974's The Hoople, beginning a long, respected solo career and effectively ending the band, but they made two albums under the truncated moniker Mott with a new singer.
