Rising from the Tampa rap underground to become one of the most versatile and electrifying forces in contemporary hip-hop, Doechii’s first encounter with virality was the whimsically introspective “Yucky Blucky Fruitcake.”

The track highlighted the singer and MC’s sharp, if theatrical, cadence and vivid lyricism, making way for the arrival of likewise vulnerable and self-reflective testimonies such as “Anxiety.” That song in particular, first released to YouTube in 2019, would go on to have the kind of second life once-under-heralded talents can only dream of, getting rerecorded in 2025 to keep up with a nearly-half-decade-late TikTok surge.

Before then though, it was the Doechii’s now patented kinetic, genre-bending energy that enamored Los Angeles’ Top Dawg Entertainment, the MC’s signing in March of 2022 making the her the first prominent female rapper on the label that gave the world Kendrick Lamar.

By the time of 2024’s Alligator Bites Never Heal mixtape, where gritty Southern rap and theatrical storytelling flourish across tracks like “NISSAN ALTIMA,” “CATFISH,” and the brilliantly fourth-wall-breaking self-therapy narrative of “DENIAL IS A RIVER,” the girl from Tampa had already secured her spot as one of the most formidable MCs of her generation.
