Losing My Religion

I was taught the straight and narrow way, I've walked it my whole life

Married young and had a son and stood fast in the right

Was a hellfire-and-brimstone preacher down in Collinsville

When the devil came to visit me in the deep Virginia hills

Standin' in the pulpit preachin' love and Godly kindness

When the boy fell ill in Blacksburg and the doctors failed to find it

The ladies came with all their love and the deacons prayed in likeness

But to no avail, the gates of Hell slowly fell upon us

I laid my boy in a six-foot hole and cursed God every moment

As the wife and I said goodbye and longed once more to hold him

I prayed for God to change His mind, but He made no provision

Standin' in the church graveyard, losin' my religion

People ask from time to time if I've found my redemption

Well, I'll be frank and won't mince words when sayin' my conviction

Well, I know folks, they sure mean well, but there's no use in wishin'

I have no guilt for leavin' God, will I be forgiven?
