The opening moments of “Don’t Be Scared” show Sweden’s Lacrosse in a pensive mood. They likely had never heard the word before this fine album. After all, this is a band that once sang “Let’s Get Old” with complete euphoria. But the opening cut is just a sign of where things can now go when the mood calls for it. “I Told You So (Didn’t I?!)" immediately returns to the kind of shamelessly happy, bouncy pop groove and melody that Scandinavians unleash like it’s a natural reflex. Despite its challenging weather, Stockholm is considered a heaven on earth, and “I Need Your Heart/I Need Your Soul,” “50% of Your Love,” and “Give You More” ride the waves of joy emitting from the band's keyboards with an unforced confidence—along with a drummer who sounds as if he’s traveling the Autobahn. “If Summer Ends” even turns mortality into a silly triviality beaten back by an infectious groove. “Easter Island” ends the album with another modestly pensive track that’s glorified by a melody worthy of the folks in Belle & Sebastian.
