Automat feature a trio of veteran German musicians who play a hypnotic mix of Krautrock-infused dub and experimental instrumental work. Centering around the challenging but accessible rhythms of drummer Achim Farber, who has played with Project Pitchfork, Prag, and Phillip Boa, and the melodic deep-end basslines of award-winning radio play producer Zeitblom (from Sovetskoe Foto), Automat are filled out by guitarist Jochen Arbeit, who has worked with Die Haut and Einsturzende Neubaten. Their self-titled debut album is an extremely appealing mix of abstract dance-like structures that flow throughout “THF,” “SXF” (which is further helped by guest Michael Wellacher’s congas), and the techno “TXF.” “The Street” features New York City No Wave rocker Lydia Lunch reciting words in warped cadences over an inspired dub that finds itself racing out of control. Throbbing Gristle’s Genesis P-Orridge brings a sense of otherworldly narrative to “Mount Tamalpais,” where the only complaint is its brevity. Einsturzende Neubauten’s Blixa Bargeld adds a creepy, delayed vocal to the twitchy rhythms of “Am Schlactensee.” The seven-minute “GWW” finishes things with further spaced-out programming and deep bass.
