Turns out that one of Tamil cinema’s most dynamic actors, singers and dancers also composes—like a boss. STR turns his hand to music production as composer for Sethuraman’s comedy Sakka Podu Podu Raja, effortlessly spinning inventive arrangements with richly layered strings, Tamil folk rhythms and unexpected classical fillips, as on the standout single “Kadhal Devathai”, whose veena solo sits astride filtered, processed bass. If this first set is anything to go by, STR’s future career in music direction promises to be a long and fruitful one.
