Longtime Pat Metheny drummer Antonio Sanchez, of Birdman and Bad Hombre fame, teams with master arranger Vince Mendoza and the superb players of the Cologne-based WDR Big Band for a thrilling transformation of recent Sanchez material. The large, sweeping sound of brass and reeds gives Sanchez’s pieces, mainly composed for his band Migration, a new kind of concentrated power. On the last three, culled from The Meridian Suite (2015), Mendoza’s pen summons great waves of harmony while Sanchez surges with momentum at the kit.
