Like Detroit band the Go, The Knast play U.K.-inspired tunes in ‘60s-inspired tones fronted by a singer who croons a little like a cross between Dwight Twilley and Tom Petty. During the late ‘90s, singer and guitarist AJ Delange fronted Stagger Lee, a heavy boogie-rock quintet of denim-clad longhairs — but he always had a love for bands like the Stone Roses, T. Rex, the La’s, Ocean Colour Scene, the Kinks, Primal Scream, the Who, and countless other old and current rock bands from the British Isles. This is apparent in the opening cut “New Breed,” which blends brash power-pop with hard-rocking (yet infectiously melodic) guitar riffs. The standout title-track dabbles in some Morrissey-esque romanticism while Fastbacks producer Kurt Bloch keeps the guitars nicely contrasted, sounding simultaneously crunchy and jangly. “King for a Day” bookends with a more sophisticated pop sensibility.
