On Street Parade, Theresa Andersson strolls through a different New Orleans than the city typically celebrated on record. A wistful morning-after feel pervades these tracks as the Swedish-born singer/songwriter goes beyond the glittery Mardi Gras surface into more unpredictable terrain. She achieves an unusual synthesis that combines the marching rhythms of Crescent City tradition with spacy arrangements and ethereal vocals that owe more to Tori Amos than Allen Toussaint. Electronic beats, odd syncopations, and eerie chorale effects give songs like “Listen to My Heels,” “Fiya’s Gone," and “Hold on to Me” an air of enticing mystery. Andersson keeps things consistently interesting, soaring to theatrical heights on “Injuns” and punctuating her vocals with pizzicato violin on “Plucks.” The woozy regrets of the title number morph into the billowing ambiance of "Sleepsong for Saoirse” and the hypnotic clatter of “Endymion.” “January” adds a pinch of calypso into the sonic gumbo, and an optimistic spirit shines through in “What Comes Next.”
