Us Mob & No Fixed Address
Wrong Side of the Road (Songs From the Motion Picture)
アルバム · Soundtrack · 1981
A hallmark moment for representation of Indigenous Australian music, the 1981 film Wrong Side of the Road spun a socially minded docudrama from the real-life experiences (on and offstage) of Adelaide bands No Fixed Address and Us Mob. Today the soundtrack has endured much more in the popular consciousness than the movie itself, thanks to the strength of tracks like No Fixed Address’ opening protest ballad “We Have Survived.” Written by drummer/singer and proud Pitjantjatjara man Bart Willoughby when he was just 18, the song repeats the phrase “We have survived the white man’s world” alongside other impactful lyrics over slinky reggae backing. “Black Mans Rights” and “Get a Grip” are similarly relevant not just for their era, but for subsequent generations of First Nations people in Australia. Us Mob’s half of the soundtrack is more rock-oriented but no less outspoken, starting with the bluntly titled “Genocide.” Especially harrowing, lyrically, are “Suicidal Contemplation” and “Tough Living,” buttressed by low-riding guitar riffs informed by both psych rock and electric blues. While the movie took home the Jury Prize at the 1981 Australian Film Institute Awards, even more notable was the soundtrack scoring commercial radio play and raising much wider awareness about the marginalization of Indigenous people.
