In the artist’s words:
Describe one of your earliest musical memories in detail. Ão began as a one-off gathering to play some samba and bossa nova covers. Jolan later made a remix of Best Served Cold, and Bert saw the project on TV. Something clicked — and as a four-piece band, we wrote our first musical baby: Ao Mar.
What are your top 3 all-time favorite albums on Apple Music, and why? Why did you choose these three albums in particular? FKA twigs, LP1 James Blake, Overgrown (Deluxe Edition) MARO, hortelã Hortelã Maro’ for its raw intimacy, FKA twigs’ ‘LP1’ for its fearless sound and visual world, and ‘Overgrown’ by James Blake for showing how emotional and textured electronic music can be — all key inspirations for Ão.

It samples my mother’s voice, blending real and mythical stories. Written after a trip to Morocco, it reflects on time, saudade, and the heartbeat of Afraka—“flesh and soul of the hidden sun.”
What’s one of the most memorable moments in your career so far? It was our first time playing “Ao mar” for a Portuguese-speaking audience of 4,000 at Coliseu dos Recreios, opening for dEUS. The pressure was real—they understood every word, making it both thrilling and nerve-wracking. The connection was electric.
Is there anything left on your bucket list as an artist or band? So many! We want to share our music all over the world and meet our musical heroes in real life. Together with our audience, we aim to create unforgettable memories through the concerts we experience with them.
