It's not at all common when a musician transcends and/or adapts to seemingly divergent styles but bassist Henry Grimes fits the bill. His career includes stints with such different figures as the King of Swing Benny Goodman and avant avatar Albert Ayler, or pianist-singer Mose Allison and baritone boss of cool Gerry Mulligan. As the the '60s approached, Grimes gravitated towards the emerging avant-garde movement in jazz, collaborating with Cecil Taylor and Don Cherry. Grimes released his debut disc as a leader in 1965 for the legendary ESP-Disk label, a trio date with avant-clarinetist Perry Robinson entitled THE CALL. After several years away from music, Grimes (with aid and encouragement of fellow bass ace William Parker) made a comeback in 2003, and plunged headlong into a revitalized New Music scene, making appearances at the Vision Festival in New York, and performing with such disparate figures as guitarist Marc Ribot, Sun Ra alumnus Marshall Allen, pianist Marilyn Crispell, and, most significantly, fellow free jazz pioneer Cecil Taylor, after a hiatus of more than 40 years.
