A well-known Japanese pop vocalist, Yukiko Haneda initially garnered attention with her 1988 debut Beating Mess. She has continued to explore an eclectic mix of sounds including Latin tango, fado, and jazz, as on 2005's Air de Tango and 2012's Changes.
Born in 1966 in Tokyo, Haneda became interested in singing at a young age. However, she graduated from the University of the Sacred Heart in Tokyo with a philosophy degree. In 1988, she released her debut album, Beating Mess, and contributed the song "Encore" to the television drama Dakishimetai! She followed up in 1989 with her sophomore album, Sora, and released the song "You Are My Home" as the theme to the 1991 movie Strawberry Road. Haneda's third studio LP, Good Times, Bad Times, arrived in 1997 and marked a move towards a more stylistically eclectic approach. Albums such as 2002's Love in the Hands, 2005's Air de Tango with Kiyoshi Shiga, and 2008's Fadista have found her exploring a variety of sounds, from jazz and standards to Latin traditions like tango and fado. In 2010, Haneda collaborated with the chamber ensemble Trio the Trip on the album Music Trip. Two years later, she returned with Changes. ~ Matt Collar
