With a wispy, modulated tenor and yearning lyricism, 4batz emerged as one of the first truly intriguing R&B artists of 2024. Born Neko Bennett, the Dallas artist first surfaced with "act i: stickerz '99'"—a stylishly subdued lover’s theme song that went viral after he performed it wearing a black balaclava in a special video. The balaclava would become an early signature. He’d wear it again in his subsequent performance video for "act ii: date @ 8," a song that only added to his buzz. With delicately lithe vocals and an undertone of dazed cool, he earned comparisons to Brent Faiyaz, even if the overall sound of his songs skews closer to The-Dream. It wasn't long before he collected a cosign from Kanye West, solidifying his status as a creator who is as distinct as he is enigmatic.
