Acel may have given her life to God when she left prominent band Moonstar88 in 2004, but she doesn’t cop to the label of gospel singer at all. When she picked up a guitar again in 2007, Acel (born Maria Cecilia Beronilla Bisa in 1976) was as surprised as anyone that her solo work spoke to universal themes of Filipino life. Her songs of innocence lost and experience gained are as secular as they come for the heartfelt and emotive voice that Acel—once the darling among pop rock frontwomen in an era dominated by chest-thumping rap-rock and post-grunge—wields in service of her convictions. Writing through the lens of brave vulnerability isn’t something she’s shy about on the anthemic “Pitik Bulag”, the buoyant “Liliwanag”, or even the English version of “One Love”—the theme song of a hit K-drama that’s endeared her to a new generation of fans. It may have taken her years to emerge from the long shadow of her early indie band success with Orphan Lily and Moonstar88, but 2012’s six-track Hello to Heaven EP and 2008’s full-length Silver Lining found her not just vocally independent but vocal about her years of teen insecurity living with a body brace, a string of heartbreaks, an attempted suicide, the perils of swift fame, and the unexpected joys of motherhood. It’s music by a self-possessed singer-songwriter that wears her beliefs on her sleeve, exorcising demons through acoustic guitars and sinewy choruses that families can still sing along to around the campfire.
