Azigza combines Middle Eastern musical techniques and instruments with English vocals, electric guitar, and bass and prog rock influences. The band was formed in San Francisco in the late '90s by multi-instrumentalist Aryeh Frankfurter (electric violin) and fusion guitarist Kevin Evans. They were joined by Pierce McDowell (bass), Stephan Junca (drums), former King Sunny Ade-sideman Rasaki Aladokun (talking drum), Cyoakha Grace (vocals), and Roland Robles (percussion), all of which had strong backgrounds in music. Their first two demo records, Lake of Fire and Whose Portals Are Night & Day, were both released in 1999 for download on www.MP3.com, and were quite popular on that site. The mini-albums were combined on 2000's Azigza with additional tracks. ~ Geoff Orens
