Nicknamed the “Prince of Soul,” R&B singer-songwriter Calvin Richardson has built a decades-long career with his classic approach to the genre.
• The North Carolina native grew up surrounded by music. His mother was in the local gospel group The Willing Wonders, and he eventually sang with them, too.
• In the early ’90s, inspired by his friends K-Ci & JoJo, Richardson formed the R&B group Undacova.
• After signing with Universal Records, he released his debut solo album, Country Boy, in 1999.
• The title of Richardson’s sophomore album, 2:35 PM, refers to the time of day that his first son was born.
• Richardson soon found success writing for other artists. He cowrote “More Than a Woman” for Angie Stone’s 2001 album Mahogany Soul and dueted with her on the track. He also cowrote “Excuse Me” for Raphael Saadiq’s 2002 LP Instant Vintage and teamed up with Babyface for “There Goes My Baby,” recorded by Charlie Wilson in 2008.
• He earned two Grammy nominations—Best Traditional R&B Performance and Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals—for 2009’s Facts of Life: The Soul of Bobby Womack, his tribute to soul legend Bobby Womack.
• “You’re So Amazing,” off his 2010 album America’s Most Wanted, earned the singer another Grammy nomination, for Best Traditional R&B Vocal Performance.
