Dance production duo C+C Music Factory enjoyed a hot streak in the early ’90s, mixing hip-hop and house on smashes like “Gonna Make You Sweat (Everybody Dance Now).” • After performing and recording together in the groups 2 Puerto Ricans, a Blackman and a Dominican and The 28th Street Crew, dance producers Robert Clivillés and David Cole came together as C+C Music Factory. They recruited rapper Freedom Williams and singer Zelma Davis to round out their sound. • Their debut album, Gonna Make You Sweat, reached No. 2 on the Billboard 200 chart and went platinum. The title track hit No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and paved the way for subsequent hits “Here We Go (Let’s Rock & Roll)” and “Things That Make You Go Hmmm…” • “Gonna Make You Sweat (Everybody Dance Now)” features lead vocals from Martha Wash, who doesn’t appear in the music video—and who was initially credited as a background singer in the liner notes. Following a lawsuit, Wash was properly credited in the video. • After touring for the next few years and undergoing some lineup changes—including Williams’ departure for a solo career—C+C Music Factory dropped their second album, Anything Goes! in 1994. It failed to achieve the same popularity as their debut. • Following David Cole’s death in 1995, Clivillés released a self-titled album under the C+C Factory name. • In 2010, a reactivated C+C Music Factory comprising Clivillés and Eric Kupper teamed up with singer Scarlett Santana for the single “Life Your Life.” A follow-up, “Rain,” arrived in 2011.
