b. Djénéba Seck Maliba, c.1966, Bamako, Mali. While still at school in the early 80s Seck attracted attention as a stage performer and began her professional career as an actress in Mali but then began singing. She was heard by guitarist Sékou Kouyaté, who brought her into his band in the mid-80s as a backing singer. The band had a hit with "N'Kadignon Yé", soon after which Kouyaté moved to France. Still in Mali, Seck continued to sing, now with other bands, such as Bama Saba, and she made a breakthrough in 1991 with her recording of "Kankélétiguya", which became emblematic of the nation's move towards democracy. In the late 90s, Seck performed in other countries, including France. Singing in a soft yet eloquent voice, she draws her repertoire largely from the traditional music of Mali. Among her other hits was "Kounkanko Kononni". Seck retained her links with Kouyaté who wrote arrangements for and appeared on her 2005 solo release, The Truth. Other artists with whom she has worked during the years include Sona Diabaté and Hadja Maninqé.
