Pianist Georgijs Osokins grabbed attention with performances at the 2015 Chopin Competition in Poland. He has parlayed those appearances into a promising career with a specialty in Chopin's music.
Osokins was born in the Latvian capital of Riga on April 25, 1995. His father, Sergejs Osokins, is a noted Latvian pianist and educator, and father and son, with sibling Andrejs Osokins, have performed and recorded as the Three Osokins. Georgijs' first lessons came from his father, and he also studied with Mikhail Voskresensky. At ten, Osokins made his public debut with the Latvian National Symphony Orchestra, performing Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 20 in D minor, K. 466. He won top prizes at the Alexander Scriabin International Competition in Paris in 2009, and the International Moscow Frederick Chopin Competition for Young Pianists in 2014. The following year, Osokins entered the International Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw. He did not win a prize, but his performance, bold and controversial, attracted concert bookers from the Chopin and His Europe Festival in Warsaw and for dates in Japan. Osokins traveled to the Juilliard School in New York that year for studies with Sergei Babayan. He later studied with Georg Friedrich Schenck in Germany and had lessons from András Dmitri Bashkirov and Oleg Maisenberg. Osokins has given recitals in the U.S., Russia, and around Europe, including one at the prestigious Berlin Konzerthaus. In 2018, he began collaborating with violinist Gidon Kremer, and he and pianist Lucas Debargue were named the first permanent guest artists of Kremer's Kremerata Baltica orchestra. He has also performed concertos with orchestras such as the Taiwan Philharmonic, the Amadeus Chamber Orchestra, and the Sinfonietta Cracovia in Poland.
Osokins' Chopin Competition performances were recorded and released by the Fryderyk Chopin Institute in 2016. He also issued recital albums on the Piano Classics label, one covering the late works of Chopin and the other music of Rachmaninov. In 2020, Osokins was heard on the Accentus label with Kremer and cellist Giedré Dirvanauskaité in a recording of rare trios by Chopin and Beethoven (the Carl Reinecke arrangement for trio of the Triple Concerto, Op. 56). Osokins travels with his own custom made piano bench. ~ James Manheim
