Kentuckian Red Foley was the consummate entertainer and a crucial figure in the modernizing of country music.
The pop foil to Hank Williams, Red Foley was one of the first musicians to record modern country records in Nashville.
His silken baritone and amiable personality put a decidedly urbane imprint on the rustic styles of Roy Acuff and the Carter Family. Along with his impressive catalog of hits--including the pop smash "Chattanooga Shoe Shine Boy," the wrenching duet with Kitty Wells "One By One," and the gospel classic "Peace in the Valley"--Foley hosted the Grand Ole Opry's "Prince Albert Show" after Roy Acuff, acted in the TV series MR. SMITH GOES TO WASHINGTON, and hosted the popular radio show "Ozark Jubilee."
