Only a Pete Frame family tree can do justice to the complicated history of Earl Preston And The TTs, which is entwined with so many other Merseybeat groups. In 1961 the group had come out of the ashes of Faron And The Tempest Tornadoes. Joey Spruce (b. George Joseph Spruce, 22 December 1942, Liverpool, England) took over as lead vocalist, taking his stage name from his American brother-in-law, Earl, and the bongo-playing Preston Epps. The group had a second, front-line vocalist in Cy Tucker (b. Thomas Thornton, 7 February 1943, Liverpool, England; also rhythm guitar) and other members were Lance Railton (b. Lance David Railton, 1 March 1943, Liverpool, England, d. 24 December 1989; lead guitar), Dave Gore (b. David William Gore, 22 January 1944, Liverpool, England; rhythm guitar), Wally Shepard (b. Walter Robinson Shepard, 25 April 1943, Liverpool, England; bass) and Ritchie Galvin (b. Richard Hughes, 28 December 1943, Liverpool, England; vocals/drums). Gore was only with the group six months. Preston was performing his own songs with the TTs before John Lennon and Paul McCartney did theirs with the Beatles. ‘They told me that they wished they had the confidence to do that, ’ says Preston now. After touring US air bases in France, they contributed to This Is Mersey Beat at the Rialto Ballroom in Liverpool before obtaining their own recording contract for Fontana Records. Smartly dressed in suits for their session, they cut a single, ‘I Know Something’/‘Watch Your Step’, but their only chart success was sharing the billing with Eden Kane on his hit, ‘Boys Cry’ and they also backed him on ‘Like I Love You’. The TTs have some fine, unreleased tracks from their days with Fontana and hopefully the record company will look through its vaults someday and release them. Although gigging furiously, they kept their day jobs, taking holidays as required. The group split at the end of 1963 with Spruce forming Earl Preston’s Realms and Tucker, Cy Tucker And The Friars. Preston’s recorded for Fontana and contributed to the album Live At The Cavern. After emigrating to Australia, Earl Preston returned to his home town. Railton died in 1989, but all the other TTs are gigging around Liverpool with Galvin part of the country rock band Harvey, and Shepard and Gore together in the excellent 50s band Persuader.
