Composer, arranger, and orchestrator of large resources, Formiga dedicates himself both to popular and classical music. His work in the genres of frevo and maracatu, in spite of a lack of national popularity for these kinds of regional productions, has its importance confirmed within Brazilian culture. Formiga won the 1965-1968, 1971, and 1978 annual contests promoted by Recife's mayoralty in the maracatu category. From 1970 to 1977, he was the conductor of the Banda Municipal do Recife. In 1971, he won a contest promoted by a major newspaper with the frevo de rua "Alô, Recife." During the commemoration of 150 years of existence of Diário de Pernambuco, Formiga presented his "Grande Abertura Diário de Pernambuco" for symphonic orchestra, military band, and choir. In 1976, he created the Orquestra Popular do Recife, becoming its conductor. In 1980, 1981, 1982, and 1989, he won the Frevança (National Meeting of Frevo and Maracatu), with his compositions "Águia de Ouro," "Formiga Está de Volta," "Tonico Está de Volta," and "Andréa no Frevo." In 1982, he produced the album Carnaval do Nordeste nO 2, which was distributed internationally. In 1996, he had released his album Sua Excelência o Frevo de Rua. ~ Alvaro Neder
