Goodiepal is the primary moniker for Kristian Vester, who has also recorded as Mainpal Inverted and Gamers in Exile, among other names. Though he is prolific, Vester prefers 7" singles, EPs, and split releases to full-length albums, and finding his records can be difficult. His music is an unusual and eclectic meeting place for European folk, sequenced IDM, and video game soundtracks. The quality and originality of his tracks makes hunting them down worth the effort.
Raised in a small town in the north of Denmark, Vester was drawn to electronics in the late '80s following a friend's acquisition of a Commodore 64 computer, and an interest in electronic music followed shortly thereafter. The European rave explosion had a big impact on Vester, and he started releasing tracks as Goodiepal on small labels in 1993, when he was only 16. Employed as a computer programmer and sound designer, Vester's work for companies like Nokia and Lego have informed his musical pursuits, and he released a series of 7" singles including "Nokia" and "Carlsberg" containing what he describes as "dubs" of company sound logos.
By the turn of the millennium Vester had collaborated with British media pranksters V/Vm and had established relationships with DAT Politics (who would release the debut Goodiepal full-length Narc Beacon in 2002) and people at the influential Tigerbeat6 label (where he has contributed numerous tracks to label compilations). Frequent Goodiepal tours find Vester deploying a laptop, keyboard, and flute to re-create his unique post-digital folk. ~ Mark Richardson
