Composer and singer Jakes Bejoy has introduced topsy-turvy trap, synth-funk love songs and other fresh sounds into south Indian film music since 2014. A native of Erattupetta in Kerala whose youth was coloured by Carnatic songs, Bejoy started out in music in his early 20s while studying engineering, releasing the album Malayalee that featured singers such as Haricharan and Vineeth Sreenivasan. Looking to pursue his creative side, he went on to study music science and technology with an elective in orchestral music at Stanford in the US. Although working on music for games at the time, Bejoy had an ambition to emulate the success of composers such as Alexandre Desplat and Jóhann Jóhannsson. He eventually returned to India, set up a studio in Chennai in 2013 and began lining up the first of many film songs and background scores for Malayalam and Tamil cinema. Malayalam film Kavi Uddheshichathu..? allowed Bejoy to bring rock and folk together in 2016, while the synth-pop jam “Ranam” from 2018 film of the same name was inspired by his scenic Bay Area drive to work. Bejoy has displayed variety across Malayalam, Telugu and Tamil films ever since, crafting breathtaking, classically rooted songs like “Vennilave” for Queen in 2018, electronic pop on “Parayuvaan” from Ishq in 2019 and high-energy music for King of Kotha in 2023 and Saripodhaa Sanivaaram in 2024.
