Malaika were the frontrunners of South Africa’s Afropop scene during the 2000s. The trio, consisting of Matshediso Mholo, Bongani Nchang, and Jabulani Ndaba, won the hearts of fans with their self-titled debut album, a South African Afropop classic that included the group’s breakout hit “Mhla Uphel’ Amandla.” The album is a combination of triumphant vocals and producer Godfrey “Guffy” Pilane’s production defined by his trademark kwaito-indebted basslines. Guffy would also helm the group’s 2005 follow-up, Vuthelani, which featured the groovy single “2 Bob.” Following the 2009 death of member Jabulani, Malaika released what would be their final album, Mmatswale, that same year. Despite disbanding, Malaika’s music remains a time capsule of 2000s-era South African popular music thanks to enduring classics like “Destiny,” which rapper Cassper Nyovest reworked in a 2017 track of the same name featuring the American soul singer Goapele.
