This UK experimental/industrial band comprised Paul Jamrozy (b. 3 March 1959), Graham Cunnington (b. 23 August 1960), Alistair Adams (b. 5 October 1959), Tony Cudlip (b. 9 September 1959) and Gus Ferguson. Originally forming in 1982 as a loose collective in New Cross, London, England, they were all co-directors of Test Department’s stable, Ministry of Power Records. However, they liaised with a variety of other artists and musicians in order to empower their large-scale projects. The most recent and impressive of these was the huge The Second Coming show for Glasgow’s 1990 Year Of Culture, set in the abandoned St. Rollox Railway Works. This served as the culmination of several years’ inaugurating spectacular musical events in unlikely settings. Others have included Cannon Street Station, Bishopsbridge Maintenance Depot, a sand quarry, a car factory in Wales and an ice rink in Friesland. ‘From the beginning there was a realization that we wanted to make things pretty monumental’, they concede. Allied to their innovative use of spectacle was the employment of instruments from the natural and unnatural environment, scrap metal and industrial cast-offs beating a rhythm to film and slide shows. Powered by a four-piece anvil chorus, the music splendidly complemented visuals drawn from 20s and 30s industrial monochromes. Originally signed up to Stevo’s Some Bizzare Records label, they came in the same wave as fellow travellers SPK and Einstürzende Neubauten. In early 1984 they published an open manifesto in a letter to the New Musical Express: ‘we will continue a disciplined attack on the official wall of ignorance both in music and in politics’. This remains a constant objective, as witnessed by their Pax Britannica album, recorded with the help of the Scottish Chamber Orchestra and Choir as a critique of Thatcherism.
