Doo Wop
The Mello-Kings were one-hit wonders in the doo wop world, fondly remembered for their lone national hit "Tonite, Tonite," which never rose higher than number 77 on the national charts, but became an enduring classic. Hailing from Mt. Vernon, a working-class suburb of New York City, they were first known as the Mellotones, led by Robert Scholl (aka Bob Scholl); the other members included Robert's brother Jerry Scholl, Ed Quinn, Neil Arena, and Larry Esposito. Renamed the Mello-Kings when they learned the Mellotones name was already taken, "Tonite, Tonite" became their first and biggest hit in 1957. They soon faded from the national spotlight, but remained stars in New York's doo wop strongholds until they broke up in 1969.
