The dual approach of British metalcore act TheCityIsOurs makes them stand out among Europe’s hard rockers. Their sound is anchored by alternating passages of thrashing, screamed vocals and clean, emotive melodies; hard-driving guitar chords and bulleting percussion alongside almost traditionally pop melodies and embellishments. They’ve steadily grown a fanbase through tracks like “Low” (the title track to their first full-length album in 2019), “Dangerous” (from 2019’s Coma) and “In the Dark” (taken from 2025’s Will You Still Love Me?).
The quintet - singer/guitarist Mikey Page, unclean vocalist Sam Stolliday, guitarist Stuart Mercer, bassist Jamie Deeks and drummer Louis Giannamore - formed in London in 2015 and, within a year, had put out their first single (“A Reason”) and EP (2016’s Wildfire). Page and Stolliday's vocal interplay was already striking, and the group had a gift for a melodic rock song. Another EP, Hollow Hope (2017), and full-length Low (2019), were accompanied by relentless touring throughout England and Europe.
TheCityIsOurs re-emerged after the COVID-19 pandemic with a slightly amended line-up - Oli Duncanson replaced Stolliday as unclean vocalist - and a deal with German label Arising Empire. It was through them that sophomore album Coma was released in 2021; Low producer Oz Craggs and the band further polished their sound on this album, inserting flourishes that wouldn’t feel out of place on more mainstream pop albums, from synthesized beats to EDM-adjacent distortion. Those details didn’t go away on 2025’s Will You Still Love Me? - and tracks like “In the Dark,” “Dopamine” and “Shame” helped the album become their most-streamed yet. ~ Mike Duquette
