On Miles Davis' “So What,” Adderley follows John Coltrane's imposing solo with a winning contrast, thanks to a stream of easy-flowing, fluttering notes that give the tune a sense of balance. Adderley's blues-infused playing also jolts fresh energy into familiar standards, as on the lilting “On Green Dolphin Street.”
