Cannonball's searing chops and playful style reached their apex on his brother Nat's 1972 album, Soul Zodiac—over astrology-themed narration, he expressed different qualities of mind on “Sagittarius.” In that same decade, he incorporated avant-jazz fire into his live performances, as on “The Steam Drill,” and although the textures changed, Adderley's easygoing blues sound remained constant.
